The sun was out, there was the barest sea breeze and the kick-off was in the traditional and still best 3pm time-slot.
It was a perfect winter’s day for Blues Tag footy.
And thus spectators were treated to a cracker when Mona Vale Raiders U/13 Team Two won a tight match against their sister team Team Three at Newport Oval on Saturday.
Mona Vale Raiders U/13s speedster Luca Shepherd burning away for a try.
For the victors Summa Blyton had a whale of a game with quick changes of direction and attacking play.
Chloe Haymen showed exceptional speed out wide and was “sensational” as marker, according to coach Matt Lloyd whose daughter Indi was the team’s general, controlling field position with an impressive tactical kicking game.
Grace Miles' direct attack and beautifully balanced running style was “a pleasure to watch,” Lloyd said, adding that "Tash Lilycrop’s cover defence was awesome and she landed a beautiful conversion".
And Isla Blyth owned play of the day with a sensational intercept try.
From 30m out Isla plucked the ball out of the opposition's clutches and bolted 30 metres before going under the posts untouched.
Shortly afterwards she followed it with a second try which turned out to be the match-winner.
Lloyd declared himself happy with the team’s performance and their focus on a straight defensive line however said the teams needs to “work on our depth in attack to allow us more time to spread the ball out wide”.
“But overall a very good performance against our sister side who were highly competitive throughout the match,” Lloyd said.
