Andy Baldwin has a deep love for the game of cricket and takes great pride in his work as a scorer.

He once took a hat trick with the ball but it’s his work with his coloured pens and highlighters where he excels.

Let’s meet Andy Baldwin

Gordon First Grade Scoring Debut at Coogee Oval in the 2020/21 season with Veena Naidu (Randwick Petersham Scorer)

What year were you born?

1992

What state do you live?

New South Wales

When did you first start developing a love for cricket?

It was when I was at the tender age of seven, (1999) when I watched the late Shane Warne single handily turn the World Cup with his wizarding craft of spin

Tell us briefly about your journey in the game, where you’ve played, what clubs and how would you describe yourself as a cricketer?

Three different clubs as a player/scorer on the Central Coast, before now looking after Gordon the past three seasons. I wasn’t the best player on the park, hence why I took up scoring

What was your highest score?

17 not out for Doyalson at Sohier Park, Ourimbah in the 2002/03 season.

What were your best bowling figures?

5/17 including a hat-trick for Doyalson at Doyalson Oval in the 2003/04 season.

Which club and or competition do you support?

I prefer to stand as a neutral in my element as scorer.

When and how did you develop a love of scoring?

As a tail-ender or bunny for my clubs when I played, I would always put up my hand to do scoring.

Which club/s do you score for?

Gordon District Cricket Club, Central Coast Representative Teams & Veterans Cricket NSW. Formerly of Warnervale Cricket Club, Northern Power Cricket Club & Doyalson-Wyee Cricket Club.

What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket so far?

It’s too close to call, between either taking that hat-trick, or being the scorer in the Warnervale’s first ever first grade title in 2018/19.

Who’s your favourite all-time cricketer?

Without a shadow of a doubt, it would have to be the late Shane Warne. I idolised him throughout his whole career as a player, coach and broadcaster.

Who has been your favourite captain?

My favourite captain would have to be Simon Dunn, laugh and a half before and after games, a real decent bloke.

Who’s been the batsman you’ve enjoyed watching the most?

Best batsman from my view as a scorer would have to be Simon Keen, cleanest ever striker of a ball.

Who in your opinion has been the best fast bowler?

Best fast bowler from my view as a scorer would have to be Chris Mills, the fastest bowler to face on the field or in the nets.

Who in your opinion has been the best spinner?

Best spinner from my view as a scorer would have to be Connor Cook, who has still got potential to up his career at the tender of age 19.

Who in your opinion has been the best wicket keeper?

Best wicket keeper from my view as a scorer, has to be Scott ‘Atko’ Atkinson. Man of a great tale, laugh and drink with after a match

Who in your opinion has been the best umpire?

Best umpire from my view as a scorer, would have to be Darren Goodger. An absolute legend from the country to the city.

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand as a scorer?

The best innings to witness firsthand as a scorer occurred at Drummoyne Oval in the PG’s where Josh Claridge coming in at 2/3 in the first over chasing 212 scored a majestic 111 on a pitch that was soft in spots to include a slow outfield as well.

Who are the 2 players you most admire in the competitions you score in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

From my scoring at Gordon, would have to be Ryan Tullia. Whilst scoring for VCNSW, there is no doubt on whom I have chosen it has to be Phil Melville.

Do you have any superstitions or idiosyncrasies as a scorer?

Coloured pens and highlighters, review sheets & jar of sweets full to the brim.

Brainstorm and research the game in question the day before matches

Coloured pens, highlighters and and lollie jar

What’s the most picturesque ground you’ve had the good fortune to play your trade as a scorer?

Without a shadow of doubt, it has to be the MCG (Mandalong Cricket Ground). Stirling Hamman’s paradise of a ground has everything that a ground in the city has, grandstand, changing rooms, electronic scoreboard just to name a few. Only one problem is that I can’t live score games out there

If there was one match up in the history of world cricket, a bowler and batsman going head to head at their peak, who would you choose?

Michael Holding vs Greg Chappell

What’s your preferred format of the game, Test Cricket, One day games, T20?

My preferred format of the game is test cricket. I don’t think that this format will be going anywhere, anytime soon.

What do Cricket Officials need to do over the next 10 or so years to ensure people get to enjoy the game as much as you do?

That’s a toughie to answer, but maybe get the game moving a bit quicker. Too many times that I have seen the game being dragged out and slowing up.

Who are the 3 cricketers from any era you’d like to invite to a BBQ?

Sir Donald George Bradman, Sir Garfield Sobers & David Lloyd. Special Guest to add is Harold Dickie Bird.

What would be your ultimate experience as a cricket scorer?

Score a test match in anywhere round the world
