Parramatta Leagues Club is a proud sponsor of Parramatta District Cricket Club
We are proud to announce that two of our very best players are moving onto the next phase of their cricket careers -seeking interstate opportunities.
Nick Bertus will be moving to South Australia to take up a contract with Northern District in Adelaide with a view to breaking into the South Australian Sheffield Shield side.
Tim Ward will be moving to Hobart to take up a Rookie Contract with Tasmania with a view to breaking into the Tasmanian Sheffield Shield team.
While we are disappointed that they will not be turning out for Parramatta this year, and that New South Wales has not encouraged them sufficiently to stay here, we are delighted that they have received that encouragement interstate.
Our Club will be equally proud of them realising their undoubted talent and breaking into first class cricket on a regular basis.
Nick follows in the footsteps of a number of New South Wales players such as Nathan Lyon, Dan Christian, Tom Cooper, and Adam Zampa who have forged outstanding careers through the South Australian pathway. Of course Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa have now returned to New South Wales having established themselves at first class level.
Tim Ward moving to Tasmania
Tim follows in similar footsteps, including those of other Parramatta players such as Bruce Neill in the 1970s, Rodney Tucker in the 1980s, and more recently Anthony Marr and Chris Brown. From other clubs in Sydney, players such as Steve Small established themselves in Tasmania before returning to the Baggy Blue.
Nick Bertus departs having led our first premiership winning first grade side in over 50 years, and as one of our most prolific run-scorers of all time. More than that he has been an inspiration and leader to all in our club. Nick will stay involved with Parra Green Shield and Junior Coaching.
Tim Ward was following a similar trajectory, a prolific run scorer and role model. As a young left-hand opening bat Tim was also a member of the Parra First Grade Premiership team. He scored seven centuries for Parra since the start of 2019 including 6 centuries in his last 14 two day games.
Both young men are “one club players” and we admire them greatly as members of the Parra Family, spreading their wings interstate.
More will be said about these two tremendous players in the future, but for now we wish them all the very best on their journey to the top, and hope that we will see them back at Parramatta later in their successful careers.
