Marnus Labuschagne is set to play in the first Test match of the Australian summer against Pakistan at the Gabba on Thursday; this will be Labuschagne’s second test in his home city of Brisbane. It is well documented that Labuschagne’s origin is Klerksdorp, South Africa but those at Redlands Tigers Cricket Club know Marnus Labuschagne as the cricketer from Redlands.

Labuschagne’s first game for Redlands Tigers was as a fourteen-year-old in the Lord Taverners u/17 competition in the 2008/09 season. He batted 6 scoring 76 not out against Western Suburbs District Cricket Club at Graceville.

Since this day Labuschagne has paid his dues playing in each grade, sixth through to first for Tigers except third grade. Each grade was one step closer to realising his dream but also an important part in the development of the rounded cricketer we watch today; you could say that Marnus completed his cricket apprenticeship at Tigers.

Each pre-season Marnus would show up at training like a mozzie intent on getting involved, batting, bowling, fielding and batting again if time permit. Marnus was never afraid of who he faced, he saw each opportunity as a challenge, and he was determined to score runs even if they were just net runs.

Season after season Labuschagne improved on the last, he matured in front of us both as a cricketer and person, he learned his game each step of the way, but one thing has never changed, that is the look in his eye.

Now trying to describe the ‘look’ in words seemed difficult, that is until I stumbled across a social media page titled ‘Idiom of the Day’ that provided me the meaning of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ as written by Eddie Blumenberg:

“When you say someone has the ‘Eye of the Tiger’, you are talking about someone who is focussed, confident, and has the look of being intense, somewhat cold but very fierce with a never say die attitude.”

After reading this post I realised that I could not describe Labuschagne’s look any better and it is fitting with him playing for Tigers.

Marnus Labuschagne we are proud to call you a mate and know that we are in your corner, play well Tiger.
