What year you were born?
2001
What is your nickname?
Sweens
What was your most memorable moment in junior cricket?
I remember playing in what must of been an U10’s game where we were playing on a concrete wicket just down the road from my house at the local state school, we’d almost finished the mornings play when I see my dog run onto the field and start chasing some kids, pretty comical and village at the same time
Tell us briefly about your cricketing journey?
I started playing in U9’s at Bracken Ridge Junior Cricket Club for a few years before moving to Sandgate-Redcliffe as an 11-year-old to continue to play juniors into Tavs. A highlight would be going on a cricket trip to Sri Lanka at 14 with some of my closest mates growing up. Having Vic Williams as my coach basically meant I learnt more in those two weeks both on and off the field than I had my whole life. Safe to say we didn’t achieve much in terms of the cricket side of things but to go overseas and be independent for a couple weeks at a young age is an achievement in its own right I suppose. Great experience. Played Grade cricket at The Gators since and have enjoyed the ups and downs it brings.
What is your pre match routine?
I like to get to the game early if I can, not really one for superstitions but ever since I scored my first hundred a year or so ago I try and wear the same undies (if mum washes them in time) for every Saturday. Always have to have some sort of bacon and eggs for breakfast before every game.
How do you amuse yourself on a plane flight?
Movies, sleep, take a peek at the over priced menu knowing I definitely won’t be buying anything off it anyway
Which singer/band would you like to see perform live?
James TW, bit of a Biebs and Ed fanboy too despite not having seen them live yet
What’s the one thing about you most people don’t know about?
I featured on a TV show as a little kid, still my claim to fame.
Who has been your funniest team mate?
Josh Moody, he’s the complete package, anyone will tell you.
Who has been your most annoying team mate?
Luke (Lurker) Anderson, captained 4th grade to a win once in my absence and will never let it go. He’ll probably tell you I’m the annoying one if you asked him, I’d be annoyed too if my skipper dragged me after going the journey...
Who was your childhood hero?
Grown up supporting the Broncos, Darren Lockyer was someone I loved to watch and look up to.
Who was your favourite all-time cricketer?
Hard to go past Ricky Ponting.
Who is the fastest bowler you’ve played against?
Peter George, I’ve never watched the ball so hard in my life. Who would have thought Peter George, the bloke who got Sachin Tendulkar out in his only Test match in 2010, would come back to Brisbane in 2020 after a stint playing 1st grade in Adelaide and jump back into Wynnum’s 4th grade side for a game. Should have seen the boys’ faces in the dressing sheds as he strolled out with his measuring tape to mark his run up 10 minutes before play. Full run up, the grunt on the delivery stride, the whole lot.
Who is the best spinner you’ve played against?
Faced Mitchell Swepson in the nets a couple times, doesn’t get much better than that.
Who was the best batsman you played against?
Haven’t played much higher grade cricket but Ryan Kay can whack a ball and Trent Kenny is a class bat. Remember standing at 1st slip wondering how on earth are these blokes getting out.
Who are the next two batsman to make their debut for the Queensland Bulls in Shield cricket?
Jack Clayton and Andrew Gode
What’s the best innings you’ve seen played in any game you’ve played throughout your playing days? If you could add a few words as to why it was the best.
Josh Moody carved out 145no in a 3rd Grade match in October 2019. When your teams 3/20 you need your captain to stand up and to get his team to 5/240 odd at stumps was outstanding. It was proper 2-Day batting and a big turning point for him as I think it really rejuvenated his love for the game. Rightly so he played the rest of the year in 2’s continuing to contribute when the team needed him most. Moods moods moods!
What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?
Being around the club and the boys on a Saturday and seeing my closest mates have success on the field.
What has been your most memorable moment in cricket?
Would have to be my 2016 trip to Sri Lanka, incredible experience.
What’s the best win you’ve been involved with?
A couple seasons ago I remember playing a 5th Grade 2-day game vs Souths. We bowled first and rolled them for 30 odd in the first couple hours. Bowlers bowled the house down and we didn’t drop anything, we went out to bat and past their total inside 4 overs, Mark Rothnie hit a 50 inside 7 or 8 overs and before we knew it, we were 180 off 30 overs with a couple of our middle order guys in. The skip declared and we sent them back in with a session or so to go. Rolled them again for closer to 100 this time with a few overs in the days play to go getting the outright on day 1 and getting a week off the next. Definitely a win I‘ll never forget.
What are the three things you’re looking forward to doing outside cricket?
Was hoping to travel overseas with my partner next year at some point so hopefully I get the chance to do that eventually.
Have got an album in the works hoping to release it closer to the end of this year.
Looking forward to the pubs reopening I suppose too.
