On Monday 5 December 2022 the Australian Over 50s Cricket team to attend the World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa, March 5th - 20th 2023, was announced.
The 16-player squad will be captained by now three-time World Cup Player Tony Clark from New South Wales and contains two other players, Steve Gollan from Western Australia and Tim Sargent from South Australia, who will both be making their third appearance at World Cups. Garry Eisenmenger from Queensland returns for his second World Cup with his left arm wrist spin after another outstanding National Championships.
Prolific opening Batter and World No1 ranked player Stephen Mace headlines the squad's batting. Mace dominated the recent tri-Series held in Brisbane between Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, averaging 131.33 in that series with two Hundreds. Another to be included in the squad from the Tri-Series is David Roach from Queensland.
Brad Papotto from Western Australia, Leith Dawes, John Rankin from South Australia and Paul Whybird from Victoria impressed the National selection panel at the recent Australian Championships with their batting. They will provide plenty of depth to support Mace, Roach and Clark in the top order.
Anthony Barranca from Western Australia will share the wicket-keeping duties with Richard Gabb from South Australia – both are accomplished batters in their own right, adding more depth to the batting options.
Papotto and Gabb have both been named as Vice Captains for the Tour.
All-rounder Damien Meek from Queensland impressed in the National Championships with his fast Bowling – bullet arm and some amazing batting displays, including a 23 ball 53* versus New South Wales. Nationals Leading wicket-taker James Morris from Victoria and Brett James from New South Wales round out the pace attack whilst Ilham Jaufer from South Australia will add variety to the spin quartet.
"The team selected is exciting and dynamic," commented Board Chairman Andrew Knight.
"The National Championships in Adelaide and the Tri-Series in Brisbane provided the selector's tremendous visibility to allow them to pick a squad that will give Tony plenty of options to play an exciting brand of cricket.” stated Knight.
The Selection panel has done a great job in blending some experience with enthusiasm. We look forward to watching them in action in March."
