Western Suburbs District Cricket Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Josh Clarke as the Club’s First Grade Captain for the 2019-2020 Sydney Premier Cricket season.

Josh joins the club after spending many rewarding seasons at Hawkesbury Cricket Club where he has scored over 1,000 runs in each of the past three seasons.

President of Western Suburbs Mike Swan is extremely excited about Josh’s decision to join Wests as the club enters a new era.

“Josh, not only has a lot of talent with both bat and ball and his performances over the years reflect his skills, but he is also a good guy. We’ve made a very conscious decision internally about good character and at 26 years of age, Josh is exactly that and has the necessary tools and experience to lead our First Grade team”

“It’s an exciting time for the black and whites” added Swan.

Josh Clarke is equally as excited, “this is a great opportunity to further enhance my cricket skills, work with the coaching team, and be the captain of a club with such a great history.”

“I’ve captained teams from an early age and really enjoy the extra responsibility. I can’t wait to get started, meet the boys, prepare for the season ahead and build on the history that’s gone before us.”

It’s been many years since Wests First Grade made the semi-finals in Sydney premier Cricket however the last 2 seasons there has been encouraging signs.

“We’ve been effectively 2 wins away from playing semi-final cricket. In cricket, things can change pretty quickly and with the talent within the club, we know what’s required” says Swan.

Wests Head Coach Chadd Porter and his experienced coaching staff are busily planning and facilitating the clubs preseason programs for the Green Shield, Poidevin Gray squad’s right through to the Senior Grade ranks.

Since 1895 Western Suburbs Club has created a significant legacy within Australian Cricket. Thomas Garrett was the clubs first Australian Player in 1877 and since, a further 19 Western Suburbs players have become Australian Internationals.  

The Club is very proud to also have 3 Australian Captains as part of its contribution to Australian Cricket; Warren Bardsley, Bob Simpson and Michael Clarke.

Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, “Wests Magpies”, is part of the Sydney Cricket Association (SCA) Grade Competition. Based at the picturesque and historic Pratten Park in Ashfield, the Club was founded in 1895 and has a proud tradition of success, especially in the development of many fine players
