Wayne Levy is one of those rare sportsmen who has done well in two first grade competitions. A Western Suburbs cricketer, Wayne, or ‘Rabbi’ as he is affectionately known also played as a winger for the Parramatta Eels.

Wests Ashfield Leagues Club is a proud sponsor of Western Suburbs Cricket Club

Wayne played six first grade rugby league games in 1974 and, a little earlier, Western Suburbs Cricket Club presented him with a Christmas present of a ‘baggy black cap’ on December 23rd., 1973, when Levy debuted, coincidentally, against Parramatta (actually called ‘Central Cumberland’ at that time).

Wayne Levy’s playing association with Wests Cricket extended over an amazing twenty five years. He played 263 matches in all, with 286 innings and a top score of 100. Wayne also served as Club Coach for two seasons as well as a stint on Wests Committee.

Wayne amassed 5,846 runs for the Magpies, at an average of 23, placing him in the top twenty all time runs scorers for the Wests. He is the second highest run scorer in Second Grade in the Club’s history.

Levy’s leadership is renowned, with Magpie contemporaries Peter Burkhart, Michael Swan, Daniel Horsley, Shaun Vose and Geoff Laing (to name a few) all speaking fondly of how Wayne impacted so positively on their introduction to Sydney Grade Cricket both on and off the field. While doing so, Wayne was playing a pivotal role in shaping Western Suburbs’ culture toward the new millennium.

As Wests First Grader #446, Wayne has always been in a rare group, with only 719 Players to have made the Magpies Firsts since 1895. Now, well overdue, Wayne Levy becomes only the 72nd. Life Member in the black and whites’ illustrious history.

Among the first to help ‘Rabbi’ celebrate, as soon as Covid-19 permits and WSDCC get their functions back on the calendar, will be those mentioned above.

Wayne Levy’s Western Suburbs Life Membership is a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much, in the true spirit of cricket, between 1969-70 and 1993-94, effectively participating on field for one fifth of the Club’s history.
