I loved the concept of picking a side across multiple eras of Queensland cricket, as it opens a fun debate. A few obvious questions go through my head, like a cricket team’s balance from a skill perspective and managing the respect some of our Queensland greats deserve from a cricket stats viewpoint. For the purposes of my team, I looked at these two factors closely and tried to be fair between the two.
Some key considerations are: 6 batsman, 3 all-rounders (Chappell, Border and Law have medium pace and spin covered), a wicket keeper, one front line spinner, 4 Quicks (and they are scary!) – Sorry that’s 13 but we are ready for all conditions 😊
Law at no.6 and captain. He is the most successful captain Queensland has had and the 2nd highest run scorer in our history. Also his all-round ability with spin and swing bowling. Love opening batting out of position. He is the highest run scorer for Queensland of all time and batted at No.3 for most of that.
Mitchell Johnson has the most test wickets for any Queensland player at 313 wickets, sitting 5th on the all-time list and a left arm quick. Kasprowicz has to be selected on his all conditions performances and swing and he is the highest wicket taker of all time for Queensland. Thomson for raw pace to scare batters with 200 test wickets.
12th men were selected for conditions – Hohns for southern wickets and Rackemann for the Gabba
The rest of the team logically speaks for itself in my opinion.
1. Matthew Hayden
2. Martin Love
3. Greg Chappell
4. Peter Burge
5. Allan Border
6. Stuart Law (Captain)
7. Ian Healy
8. Mitchell Johnson
9. Craig McDermott
10. Michael Kasprowicz
11. Jeff Thomson
12th man Carl Rackemann or Trevor Hohns – conditions based
