This week saw the Women’s Premier Cricket season get underway after a false start last week due to rain, as well as the first of the two-day fixtures in the Men’s McDonald’s NSW Premier Cricket Competition.
First ball – Double Up! Sydney second-grader Tristen McDonald put on a mammoth effort to score 205 off 262 balls against Bankstown on the weekend, to top all scorers for the round. The young batter smacked 29 boundaries on his way to his double ton.
Second ball – MVP! Sydney’s Skye Halmarick pulled off one of the all-round performances of the week, scoring 69* off 50 balls and taking 1/10 off her two overs in the Brewer Shield. Certainly one-to-watch for the future!
Third ball – Milestone Man! Huge effort from Easts’ first-grader Angus Robson, who brought up his 5000th run milestone for the Dolphins with a hard-fought 161 on the weekend against UNSW. A well-earned milestone for a consistent performer for the club.
Fourth ball – Five-fa! Outstanding performance by Elizabeth McShane in Brewer Shield for Parramatta, claiming 5/17 off her three overs. The young bowler even outperformed fellow clubmate and NSW Representative Claire Moore, who picked up a fine 3/10 (3) in first grade.
Fifth ball – Cleaning Up! UTS North Sydney certainly look to have a strong bowling attack right throughout the club, with fifth-grader Henry Riseborough tearing through the Mosman batting line-up, finishing with figures of 6/23 after Day 1, closely followed by first-grader James Campbell in taking 6/55.
Sixth ball – Killer attack! Manly-Warringah’s second grade women’s side absolutely demolished Northern Districts, bowling the Rangers out for 28. The Waratah’s stellar bowling line-up saw Molly Kidd lead the way with 3/5 off three overs and Sophie Morris claim 1/2 off her three overs, also finishing with the week’s best economy rate of only 0.66! An outstanding effort!
Second Over
First ball – Tons all ‘round! Northern District have once again showed why they’re one of the heavyweight clubs in the competition with four centurions this week. Daniel Anderson (1st grade - 114*), Mitchell Crayn (2nd grade – 123), Ryan Bolger (5th grade – 154) and Avinash Mirando (5th grade – 103*) all put their best foot forward to position their sides nicely heading into next week against Randwick-Petersham.
Second ball – Sweet Hitting! Gordon Women’s First-Grader Heidi Cheadle must have been in some sort of a hurry, scoring 63 off 44 balls, including 9 boundaries and a strike-rate of 143.18, to lead her team to victory in chasing down Sydney’s 120 with one over to spare.
Third ball – Leading the way! Manly-Warringah second-grader Matthew Brewster led the way for the Waratahs with a dominant 157 against Blacktown. Fourth-grader Hayden Williams also brought up his maiden five-wicket haul, taking 5/27.
Fourth ball – Pair of Queens! The great bowling partnership between Ella Briscoe and Rhiannon Dick for St George-Sutherland’s First Grade Women’s side saw them take 3/26 and 3/14 respectively to guide their team to a handy win over Parramatta.
Fifth ball – Return to form! Gordon first-grader Quincy Titterton’s first time rolling the arm over this season came with a bit of fortune, taking 5/44 against Sutherland. Trystan Kennedy also struck a sweet 127 in second grade for the Stags in dominating the first week’s action.
Sixth ball – Skittled! Wonderful bowling by Penrith Women’s First-Grader Elise Robertson who led the Panthers to a win over Bankstown, taking 3/6 off her two overs.
Super Over
In what was an enthralling encounter, we saw our first super-over of the season between UTS North Sydney and Campbelltown Camden in the Women’s Third Grade Competition. Bears opener Amy Gibbons was the star of the show – effecting a run-out and hitting a four and a six to chase down the 12 runs required to steer her side to a nail-biting victory over the Ghosts.
