Fourth grade premiers!!
What a seriously good game of cricket
Scraping to an even 200 thanks to Jackson Parker’s 66 (248) and Myles Price Moor’s 35 (76) not out, momentum shifted constantly across the first two days of play. A late wicket from young Alex Procopis late on day 2 saw Toombul 3-108 at stumps, and the game in the balance. A big two hours to start day 3 had Toombul 8-165 and then 9-197. Despite all efforts, Toombul got across the line and first innings went the way of our cross (Buckland) road rivals.
With a day and a half to play, Matt Clarke and Liam Byrne went out to bat and set the tone. Making it look as if it was the backyard cricket they played together as kids, Clarkey and Byrney got the team to 90 at good pace.
With plenty of twists left in the tale, the Northies boys managed a typical middle order collapse, losing 7-66. Step up Myles Price Moor. The man they call two dads, Myles boomed 41 (45) not out and was ably helped by the Tom Brady of Norths, Mitch Witt. He mightn’t have been a high draft pick as a junior Witty, but he’s had a great career, won a fistful of premierships and retired about 4 times!
The declaration came at 7-208, leaving 70 overs in the day. The equation was simple, Toombul needed to either chase the 202 or not be dismissed all out and they would win. Norths needed 10 wickets.
Myles continued his cracking game, taking the first wicket before Witty went bang bang, reducing Toombul to 3-28. Importantly, Witty took the wicket of their first innings top scorer. Despite being 6-65, Toombul had a set batter on 55 (65) who lead his team up and over the 100 mark. Procopis showed great nerve with the ball, and drew a solid clip off the pads in the air which appeared wide of Jackson Parker at mid-on. Three steps, a dive, and a right hand at full stretch - he was out!
Toombul fought to the end, and with less than half an hour left in the day they were still just 9 down. Myles continued his stellar game, claiming his 8th wicket of the match (4 in each inning) to win it. Scenes!
The rare outright win to overturn the first innings result was completed. Remarkably, Matt Clarke, Andy Campbell, Mitch Witt and Tommy Adams all played the last time this happened for Norths in a grand final too, which was 3s in the 2015/16 season.
Congratulations to the entire squad who played 4s during the year - all 32 of you! Well done Mickey on yet another premiership as skipper, as well as the unofficial leadership contingent of the team. Enjoy it boys, you’ll wake up for the next 360 odd days still premiers!
