Ross Chapman has been involved with our Association since its beginnings. As a regular player and often captain of Lew Cooper’s Queensland Cricketers Club Golden Oldies team since the early 1990’s, Ross was one of the initial players selected by Lew to play in the inaugural Qld V NSW Over 60’s played at Tenterfield in 2008, later to become the Cooper-Finlay Cup. He has played in every event since.

He was then a member and shared the captaincy role in the first Australian Championships attended by Queensland at Launceston in 2009. In 2010 he captained the Over 60’s team in the final match against NSW to win our first championship and then was selected along with fellow Queenslanders Colin Cooke and John Bell to tour the UK in the original Australian Over 60’s team with his Australian Cap Number 6. After captaining the QVC team to the 2012 championships in Adelaide he then captained the team to win the 2013 Over 60’s Championships at the Sunshine Coast and was a member of the 2015 Over 60’s Championships winners in Hobart. He was unable to play in the 2014 championships due to a broken thumb.  Ross is also a member of the current Over 70’s Championship team won at the Sunshine Coast in 2018. He has represented Australia in six separate series being captain and or vice-captain in five of these.

Administratively, Ross became involved with Kerry Emery in setting up Queensland Seniors Cricket in 2011 culminating in its official formation in November 2011 when Kerry was elected president and Ross secretary/treasurer. The pair worked together to set up the Rules with formal adoption in November 2012 with a membership of sixteen.

As the Association rapidly grew they prepared new policies and procedures to guide the organisation with Gill Chapman taking over match and inter-state arrangements.

Ross continued in these two roles until 2016 when he relinquished the treasurer’s role to John Stackpoole when our membership had grown to 120. In 2013 when it was decided to outfit our players with Qld clothing and cricket caps Ross took on the role of ordering and distributing clothing and caps with Tim Bevan later co-opted to assist in distribution to players. This role became very considerable with around $10,000 being transacted annually until on Ross and Tim’s recommendation a clothing distributorship was established in 2018.

Ross has also acted as a QVC selector for three years from 2013 to 2015. During this period Queensland was successful with three Australian Championship wins and two runners up in the Over 60’s in 2014 and in the Over 70’s in 2015.  Since 2012 he has been an Australian selector for Over 60’s or Over 70’s until stepping down at the end of 2018.

Ross has now decided to retire from any administrative and selecting roles to have a final year (or two?) just playing the game he has supported for over 60 years. He is a very worthy recipient of Life Membership of Queensland Veterans Cricket Inc.
