Redlands Tigers Cricket Club
Mar 01 2021

On Sunday 28 February 2021 the Cullen Family, Barry, Bernadette, Craig and James, gifted three new flags to the Redlands Tigers Players to proudly fly on game days. Bernadette and Craig were unable to attend the raising of the new flags but Barry and James were joined by a group of players led by Club President, Wayne Todman and Club Captain, Simon Milenko.

It has been ten years since the unfurling of the Redlands Tigers Player’s flag in 2011 at the inaugural Redland Tigers pre-season camp. The camp, a concept of James Cullen, was called the Future Leaders and Player Development Camp and forty Tigers players were invited to attend the three-day camp filled with leadership, bonding, culture and fitness elements and activities.

Coincidentally, in the lead up to the camp, two flag poles were erected at the gates to Peter Burge Oval and discussions took place in regard to ordering a Redlands Tigers flag branded with the club logo to fly beside the Queensland flag. This started some discussion about what a Redlands Tigers flag would look like and Barry Cullen challenged a delegate of players: Dom Cassell, Wayne Todman, Craig Cullen, James Cullen, Cameron French and Matt Williamson to design a flag.

After some challenging but healthy discussions the flag design was purposely made clearly different from the Redlands Tigers Club logo that we proudly wear on our baggy green and shirts. The thought process behind this was to design something that would further motivate and inspire the players when on the field and playing under the flag, whilst also illustrating the Tigers playing style.

The words thrown around during the design process and revisited and discussed at the Tigers camp included: pride, aggression, style, youth, strength, fight and courage.

The background colours of the flag embrace the maroon, gold and green of Redlands Tigers. The history of these colours began in 1995 with the amalgamation of Redlands Cricket Association (maroon) and Eastern Suburbs District Cricket Club (gold and green) where all three colours were incorporated to represent the new entity Redlands Cricket Inc – Redlands Tigers Cricket Club.
