Selecting the best grade team I have had the pleasure of playing with for the mighty Toombul Bulls almost picks itself with the majority coming from a dominant decade for the men from Nundah. Debuting for Toombul in 2010 it just seemed “normal” to be surrounded by grade legends, Queensland Bulls and future Australian stars as when any of them donned the maroon cap everything else didn’t matter, they were representing the club and playing to win.

In batting order:

1. Matthew Renshaw

He earned his stripes and scrapped all the way, starting in lower grades and scoring vast numbers of runs even before people were noticing. He was always the craftsman and never the brute however as his career has blossomed, he has become one of Australia’s most adaptable players in all formats. His returns to Oxenham Park are infamous for opposition attacks as he always delivers with mountains of runs

2. Wade Townsend

The previous record holder for the highest individual total of 311*, Wade always knew what he had to do and could do it in all conditions. He was diligently professional when it came to his batting. Without a doubt the kind of batsman you loved to have in your team as he could easily bat for days and ensure that the bowlers got to put the feet up.

3. Chris Lynn (Captain)

No need to say too much more other than reiterate others about his talent in the red ball game. In an alternate universe somewhere, Chris is a well-established Test Batsman that oozes class and is ever dependable. Our universe however isn’t too bad, the rare occasion he plays for the Toombul Bulls draws the Nundah Community down to the “The Yard” where he is creating folklore for years to come.

4. Luke Pomersbach

The most talented cricketer I have ever seen. Easily the first of mind when asked who the best cricketer I have played with, this includes off-field as well. The nicest, caring gentleman around the club and first to make sure others were looked after. On-field, simply, dominate. If a return to Queensland ever happens, I am sure the club will welcome him back with open arms.

5. Glen Batticotto

Ever reliable with bat and ball, a nightmare to bowl to in the nets and a nightmare to face in the nets. I am glad that I played with Glen during his Toombul stint and not against him. Often was the case that the top order had piled on the runs only for Glen to smash a quick 100 after tea to really rub the salt in. Any period of the game where it was in the balance Glen made it his own. A pleasure to watch and again a pleasure to have in the change room.

6. Ryan Harris

How lucky we were as a club to have one of Australia’s greatest ever. The quintessential role model who perfectly represents passion and determination. It holds strong in our core values just how he played the game for Toombul as he showed just as much pride in our badge as he did with the badge atop his baggy green. A legend!

7. Preston White

The leader in almost every statistic in a club who’s record books go beyond the turn of the century. He most certainly couldn’t be left out of this team with his ability to swing the ball amassing huge numbers of wickets and his late innings power hitting and destructibility putting the nail in many oppositions’ chances of a victory. Continues to showcase his skill in Premier Grade Cricket adding more strings to his bow every season.

8. Gavin Fitness (Wicket Keeper)

Didn’t he pull us out of the fire more than once. Always came into bat under in the toughest situations and always got the job done. Behind the stumps he was always tidy and kept the team’s standards high. Always the player you wanted to play with and never against as he never took a backward step.

9. Cameron Boyce

Still on the list to become Toombul’s next Australian Test Cap. The best leg-spinner in the country who repeatedly delivers in the clutch. The games on the line he is the one who wins it for you. Handy addition to the batting order with impressive statistics to back the ability. He is exactly what you need from your wrist spinner and so much more.

10. Steen Carlson

The Prince of Nundah was ever reliable. Ball in hand never wavered, bat in hand never died wondering. He could put the ball on a 10c piece and settle in for the spell, anytime of day, any situation in the match. Made many returning 1st Class batsmen look mediocre and made the established grade batsman look less so. Another player whose t and skill that were integral to Toombul success.

11. Nick Fitzpatrick

Swing bowling genius. Swung them round corners and knicked them off for fun (in his own words). The perfect partnership bowler, if he wasn’t taking wickets, he wasn’t going for runs. A hard bowler to get on top of and came at you all day. His 2nd new ball spells were especially difficult and always tidied up the innings. A great addition to the club when he ventured down the highway and got involved wherever he could to help others improve.

12.  Chris Sabburg

Hard done not to make the starting 11 as he is more than capable anywhere in the order and provides wicket taking finger spin to match. The best fielder I have played with no questions asked and his attitude towards self-improvement sees him now dominate in Western Australia.

Coach: Harry Frei

The team coaches itself but Harry Frei would always be there for when the going gets tough.

Manager: Chic Leeder

Australia’s best _________. You can fill in the blank with almost anything you can think of and its true.
