The Chappell Foundation is proud to announce its new funding partnership, with Raw Potential Canberra.
The $50,000 grant approved by TCF directors today is our first commitment to supporting homeless and at-risk youngsters in the national capital and adjoining parts of NSW.
The grant will support Raw Potential’s impressive new initiative, delivering youth outreach services “where young people are at” by a special-purpose van.
In three months since the customised van came into operation, RPC’s outreach workers have supported 120 youngsters with emergency care packages, counselling and connections to health, housing and employment assistance.
In its 35th year of operation, Raw Potential Canberra’s vision is to “empower disadvantaged youth by providing opportunities for a bright future”.
Yet, the charity runs lean; its only salaried staff are two outreach workers.
Like many others, RPC is encountering unprecedented demand since the pandemic onset, under pressure of worsening homelessness and family breakdowns, with associated mental health and substance abuse problems.
The Foundation sees supporting RPC as the start of a long-term commitment to the under-recognised problem of youth homelessness in the national capital.
This commitment is enabled by the energy and vision of our Canberra supporters Peter and Sue Maloney and the remarkable generosity of their friends.
Last year their “Maloney’s Long Lunch” raised more than $125,000 for TCF to distribute among frontline partners in Sydney, Brisbane, regional NSW – and now Canberra.
We will bring you news on the 2021 Long Lunch as it develops.
Change at The Chappell Foundation
Two new directors have joined the Foundation, following the recent retirement of our esteemed colleague Vera Poole.
Human resources leader Evangeline Carpio (left) and media and communications consultant Kate de Brito attended their first TCF board meeting today.
“We are delighted to welcome two impressive, highly accomplished women to our ranks,” said Foundation chairman and co-founder Darshak Mehta.
“Vangie and Kate both have acute social consciences and strong motivation – essential qualities for directors of a charity such as ours.”
Darshak said directors would “dearly miss” Vera as a board colleague but are reassured by her offer to continue supporting TCF as a volunteer.
“Vera’s enthusiasm was contagious and over her three years as a director she has contributed immensely to our success with her time and ideas.”
Vera said retirement from “a wonderful board in a wonderful cause” cleared more space for her volunteer work with Australia for UNHCR and Royal North Shore Hospital.
Kate de Brito has worked in senior digital journalism roles including Head of Digital for News Corp Editorial Network, editor-in-chief at Mamamia and, most recently, Editor-in-Chief at news.com.au – one of Australia’s leading news sites.
A Bachelor of Counselling, Kate also worked 18 months as case manager for a community group providing housing to homeless men with children.
Vangie Carpio has more than 15 years’ experience leading HR and change agendas for businesses in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, including ANZ, Arthur J Gallagher, Yoma Group and University of Sydney.
Following charity work in Myanmar, Vangie had been seeking an active not-for-profit role in Australia, with homelessness one of her priority concerns.
Celebrate Wimbledon 1971 to help beat youth homelessness 2021
The Captain’s Club, our Brisbane fundraising partner, continues building its reputation for high-quality, high-entertainment events with Chappell 108 Sporting Legends Charity Function on March 19.
The luncheon, in the Hilton Brisbane ballroom, marks the 50th anniversary of a wonderful Wimbledon when 19-year-old Evonne Goolagong beat compatriot Margaret Court for the women’s championship and John Newcombe won his fourth men’s title.
The event features a rare chance to gain the tennis insights of Pat Rafter, twice US Open champion, twice Wimbledon runner-up and TCF Patron.
Guests will also hear from Test great and TCF co-founder Greg Chappell, rugby league supercoach Wayne Bennett and 1984 Wallabies rugby union Grand Slam coach (and noted broadcaster) Alan Jones.
TCF gratefully receives the proceeds of the March 19 event for distribution to youth homelessness charities.
“Australia is one of the greatest countries on earth and yet our rate of youth homelessness is a national crisis,” said Captain’s Club chairman Matt Brannelly.
“Each night more than 30,000 people under the age of 25 sleep without shelter while 19,000 are under the age of 14.”

Taldumande grant finalised
TCF’s board today authorised a $250,000 grant to Taldumande Youth Services to help buy a house for young people aged 12-15 years who are at risk of homelessness.
This is the Foundation’s first grant to a bricks-and-mortar project. Usually we support service delivery programs.
Taldumande is seeking a property in the Greater Parramatta area for its Family Preservation and Restoration Program.
The program gives secure shelter and counselling to teenagers who cannot be at home, usually because of family stresses, with the aim of them returning when home conditions improve.
Major property developers Lendlease and Multiplex will contribute to ensuring the property meets Taldumande’ requirements and government standards.
North Sydney-based Taldumande has been helping homeless and at-risk youth for 40 years.
