David Gilbert made his first-class debut playing for New South Wales in 1983/84 season. Yesterday the man they call “Lizard” return to the first-class scene making his debut as a match referee in the Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and South Australia at Bankstown Oval.

Gilbert has had a long association with Cricket. As a fast bowler he reached the ultimate of playing Test cricket for Australia (Cap #330), before moving into coaching and administration.

He played 9 test for Australia and 14 One day Internationals. In first-class cricket, Gilbert took 354 wickets at an average of 32.39 with best figures of 8 for 59.

In 1995 Gilbert was appointed Cricket Manager of Surrey County Cricket in the U.K and then in 1997, he became the general manager of Sussex County Cricket.

Gilbert serviced as Chief Executive officer of Cricket New South Wales from 2003 to 2014. From 2014 to 2018 Gilbert was the President of Western Suburbs District Cricket Club one of the oldest and established (1895) clubs in the NSW Premier Cricket Competition.

In 2006 David Gilbert was selected in Western Suburbs Team of the Millenium.

Gilbert joined the Cricket Australia (CA) Supplementary Referee Panel in season 2018/19 and most recently appointed to the WNCL Final between New South Wales and Western Australia at North Sydney Oval.

So far this season Gilbert has officiated throughout the Women’s A Series between Australia A and India A; Rebel WBBL; CA Under 17 National Championships; a men’s Tour Match featuring Pakistan as well as WNCL minor-round matches.

In his first-class debut as a match referee, he will be alongside Umpires Simon Fry and Shawn Craig.
