Western Suburbs District Cricket Club is sad to announce the passing of one of the Club’s First Grade Players, Bob Barber, Player # 495.
Bob, a bustling and very ‘competitive’ fast bowler, debuted in First Grade against Balmain on January 8th. 1983 and played 29 games in first grade. He took 50 first grade wickets at an average of 25.60 with his best performance 5 for 69.
The Magpies were a strong club in Bob’s era and his contemporaries included Dirk Wellham, Greg Dyer, Dave Gilbert, Brad Mc Namara, Greg Matthews, Paul Ryan, Scott Hookey and current Club President Michael Swan.
His overall career at Western Suburbs stretched from 1981-82 season to 1992-93, where he took a remarkable 289 wickets at only 22.03. His club best was 8 for 50. Bob’s highest score was 49 across his 80 innings for the club.
Bob moved across to St George in 1993/94 and then to Randwick Cricket Club where he had the good fortune of being a member of the Randwick 3rd Grade premiership winning team in 1995/96.
Bob Barber passed away last Sunday in ICU at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after complications from a bone marrow transplant.
Hi passing was quite sudden, as he had been in good form, regularly attending Pratten Park matches this season. In fact he was asked to present T20 Caps to Javed Ahmadi (#99) and Jack Bermingham (#100) when Wests played Sydney University on November 28th 2021.
Bob Barber’s funeral will be held tomorrow (Wednesday 19th.) at 2pm in the West Chapel at Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium.
We send our sincere condolences to Bob’s family and friends. He will be sorely missed at his beloved Pratten Park.
