The Western Suburbs Club is saddened to hear of the passing of State fast bowler, Les Ellis at the age of 85.
Les played three games for NSW in 1964-65 and was Wests First Grade Player #390, debuting against Central Cumberland on 26 September 1959.
Ellis took 151 wickets for WSDCC at an enviable average of 17.13 in his six seasons. While taking 26 catches, he accumulated 476 runs, with a highest score of 40, at an average of 13.60.
Les’ bowling was described as “fast and accurate” and it contributed to two Magpies’ Premierships, in the 1959-60 and 1963-64 seasons.
In the 1959-60 victory, against St. George, each day of the Final was watched by more than 4,000 at the SCG. Les Ellis had assisted Wests through the semi-final against Petersham, with his 4-52 providing great support for Alan Davidson’s 4-50.
The formidable 1963-64 Team, captained by Davidson, also claimed the Minor Premiership. Les Ellis had ripped through Waverley in the semi-final, taking 5-36, and contributed another ‘5fa’ in the SCG Final, again versus St. George (5-69). Les calmly hit the winning runs for Wests to claim their ninth first grade premiership to that point.
Leslie George Ellis was born in New Lambton, Newcastle on 2 March 1936. He passed away yesterday, 19 July 2021 in Newcastle. Our sympathies are extended to Les’ family and friends. Rest in Peace.
