Zac Beveridge has great memories of his teenage years paying cricket in Toowoomba and is now playing for Western Suburbs in Queensland Premier Cricket.
Let’s find out more about Zac’s journey so far
What year you were born?
1997
If you can share with our readers how you would describe yourself as a cricketer?
I’d like to think of myself as an allrounder but probably more so, an off spinner
What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket so far?
I’ve enjoyed the challenges of Brisbane Grade Cricket, but prior to this I played in Toowoomba where I was fortunate enough to win 3 two-day flags in 4 seasons (prior to this, our club hadn’t won one). Not cricket related, but there have also been many club nights with these men I’m lucky enough to take the field with each week and each of these always promise to be memorable… I can’t really elaborate on this any further.
At what age did you make your first-grade debut?
I first got to make my limited overs debut due to a Chris Sabburg injury back in my first season in Brisbane, I think I was 19/20 and after a few more years of trying to string together some performances, I was fortunate enough and privileged to play some two day cricket.
Who’s your favourite all-time cricketer?
This is a tough one, however I admire Michael Hussey due to his relentless work ethic and down to earth nature.
Who is the best fastest bowler you’ve played against?
Billy Stanlake, Mark Steketee and Brendan Doggett. I’ll give Stek the edge purely because his Darling Downs born and bred. And Brendan’s on my team, so I’ve seen him send some down against other blokes in Brisbane. I’ve only had to face him the nets a few times – still very quick.
Mark Steketee
Who is the best spinner you’ve played against?
This is another tough one, I like to try and benchmark myself against guys of the similar skillset. However, I may be bias, but Jonte Pattison, Steve Paulsen and Paddy Dooley all come to mind. I haven’t played much against these guys, more so with, and their talent is undeniable, not to mention the way they think about the game.
Who’s the best wicket keeper you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?
Dom O’Brien. I got to play a season with Dom and his natural ability is second to none, after not playing for years, he picked up the gloves and not a thing looked out of place. It was an absolute pleasure to watch.
Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?
I’ve been on the receiving end of a few but one of the better ones that comes to mind is an Andrew Gode 60 off about 18 balls in the T20 final two years ago, we were chasing our tail from the get go and you just couldn’t bowl anywhere to him.
Sam Truloff has also played a few, in a two day game against Redlands, who had some pretty handy bowlers, he made a chanceless 170 and made batting look at lot easier than it was.
Sam Truloff
Who are the two players in QLD Premier Cricket you’ve come to admire most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?
Pat Collins and Steve McGiffin, the first purely for his competitive spirit, I have never seen a man more devoted to the game and to his club, truly admirable. And the latter just goes in leaps and bounds every season, developing skills and becoming better and better. Steve works extremely hard and this shows with him being one of the best players in the comp.
Steve McGiffin
Which singer/band would you like to see perform live?
Luke Combs – every day of the week.
Can you recall some banter or an exchange on the cricket field that still makes you laugh today?
Nothing specific, but Pat Collins getting fired up and spraying people is up there with height of entertainment.
Who’s been the biggest influence on your career so far?
Alan Hill and Brian May. A few may not know these people but have been absolutely paramount to my game for as long as I can remember. Fast forward, many of the guys at Wests have also helped me to continue to grow my game, namely, Pete Steindl, Steve Paulsen and many others. Finally, my father, I wouldn’t be half the person I am today without him and that can’t be put into words.
Brian May
Where do you find inspiration that gets you through challenging times?
As above and the people closest to me. They know who they are, and cricket is a challenging game at times and you need to find a way to rest and reset.
Who are the three people in the world you’d love to have a chat to in person?
Michael Hussey, Tigers Woods and Roger Federer.
What do you like to do to relax outside cricket?
Chill with my better half, have a few beers with my good mates and play more sport.
What’s your occupation?
Property Valuer for Acumentis Group – Currently studying a Masters in property investment and development.
Do you have a favourite quote?

Can we ask, what would it mean to you to be selected to play for QLD?
This is what we all aspire to do in the Brisbane Grade Scene. All the ups and downs, the relentless running and fitness coupled with hitting and bowling 1000’s of balls. It’d be special, but more so to the people around me, who I think I owe it to if given the chance.
